Small things along the way
I had though of having a daily update but last week was too busy to allow me to do so.
Reading the book of Ezra in one sitting for QT was wonderful. The one thing that really struck me in this book was how God is the Divine Initiator of everything! He not only initiates, He calls various ones to rise up and gives them the privilege of working in concert with Him, and He empowers and protects. Truly, God is the Divine Initiator, and without His initiatives, nothing will come to pass, not my salvation, not my desire to seek Him, not my desperate need to pray.
Of course, that is not to say that I have no part in response. God initiates and man responds. To every initiative of God, man responds, either in obedience and surrender, or in disobedience and pride. No man is perfect and will always have times when he recognises the initiative of God, that soft prompting of the Holy Spirit, but fail to act in obedience. My aim, personally, at least, is to have more times when I'll respond in obedience, and I pray that by God's grace, the ratio of obedience to disobedience will increase as I carry on in life's journey!
This week, I had the opportunity to have my faith stretched. Needing to take a cab near midnight along a somewhat quiet road, I prayed and asked for God's provision because I think I really needed to take a cab but was not too willing to call for one. I wanted to believe that God provides in times of need. My faith was stretched as the minutes ticked by. I gave myself, or should I say, I gave God, 5 minutes after which I will decide to call a cab. And just when I was tempted to say that this is probably it and I should call a cab, an empty cab drove into view! I was frankly amazed at the good timing.
Not content with that, I asked God to clear the way home that no red light will be encountered. I felt that my faith was stretched with every traffic junction I approached. And I was amazed; there were no red lights until the destination! Twice, the lights were red when the cab approached. I quickly asked God to please turn the light green, and the light turned green so that the cab carried on on its way! Wow!
It was a small matter but one that really stretched my faith. My faith is increased as I read of the faithfulness of God in the Scriptures, and I experience His provision in my life. The Scriptures urged me to put my trust in God, to ask of Him in need, as John 16:24 says, and when I did, the Lord showed Himself faithful to meet my needs and even exceed them!
God is faithful; He is the Faithful Initiator! All praise and glory to Him!
