Happenings of the Day

The focus on the poor and needy for this year's 40 day fast and pray has been a very good and timely reminder.

This morning, on my way to work (earlier than usual since I had something important to attend to) I chanced upon a blind uncle crossing the road. I wasn't sure why but I was stunned for a second or two, seeing him - white cane in his left hand and walking stick in his right hand - crossing the road unassisted. Cars on both sides stopped (without horning) as he crossed. When it struck me that he obviously did not know where he was heading - he was walking diagonally across the road in the direction of a car - I moved forward to aid him.

I found out that he was heading for one of the hospital blocks and decided to assist him all the way there. There was no way I could abandon him after having just helped him cross the road. The going was slow as he had to rely on the walking stick to move along. It took about 20 minutes to reach his destination and by that time I was all sweaty. It's tiring to walk so slowly! Throughout the short walk, I informed him when we going to turn around corners and chatted with him. I would have liked to share the gospel, but sensed that that wasn't the right time.

Anyway, looking back, I've to thank God for this opportunity to grow. It was very timely, and although it was I who helped the uncle, I felt more blessed in return for this privilege. It was somewhat out of my comfort zone since the uncle was sweaty and I had to hold his elbow in assisting him. Still, I did so because of my love for Jesus. I prayed for him (in my heart of course) and hoped that one day he will come to find hope and life in Jesus.

I've been praying for a full compassion for myself and God is answering my prayers in small steps and quiet calls of obedience. This is one of those.

Thankful.
